Poliqamiyanın qanuniliyi bəzi dünya ölkələrində tanınır. Poliqamiya təxminən 200 müstəqil dövlətdən 58-də qanunidir. Onların əksəriyyəti Afrika və Asiyada yerləşən müsəlman dövlətləridir. Həmin dövlətlərin əksəriyyətində poliginiyaya qanunvericiliklə icazə verilir. Poliandriya isə faktiki olaraq bütün dünya ölkələrində qanunsuz hesab olunur. Digər müstəqil dövlətlər poliqamiyanı tanımırlar.
Qeyd edilən dövlətlərdə yalnız müsəlmanlara münasibətdə poliqam nikahları tənzimləyən xüsusi qanunvericilik aktları var.
